Just a couple of football photos

October 7th, 2009, 2:50 pm by dina

With football season being a pretty big deal here in the RGV, I thought it would be appropriate to post a couple of portraits.  Normally, we just print straight photos where the only variables we photographers play with are scene composition, lighting, and angle.  There is some editing in post-production, too: using editing software like Adobe Photoshop to make adjustments such as tweaking the contrast, fine-tuning the sharpness, or adjusting the image crop to better fit the page layout.  But, there is a limit to how much one can adjust an image before photo-journalistic ethics are breached.  While out on an assignment recently at a local college photo ethics were the topic of a conversation I had with a new and amateur photographer.  All this is an aside, however, to the original point I wanted to make, which is:  we usually print straight-forward photographs in the the Star, but every once in a while it’s fun to offer the readers a photograph that takes advantage of all the things Photoshop can do and still remain true to photo-j ethics.  So here are two images I created by creating a collage of separate portraits, laying them on a background created of yet another photo (a close-up of a football) layered with some color gradients.  The result is two singular images created from many that still show one overall portrait in each image, in this case the Harlingen Cardinals defensive line and the Rio Hondo Bobcats offensive line.

and for just one more example, here’s an example of what the more traditional portrait looks like:

btw, we ended up printing one version of each: the collage of the cards, and the traditional portrait of the bobcats.

Don’t Over Think Things…

At times when you talk with a photographer they speak a lot of jargon and talk a lot about their equipment. Well in an effort to remind myself of how much fun photography can be I took a page from Shawn Rocco who shoots for the The News & Observer in Raleigh N.C. Like the rest of us PJ’s he uses fancy expensive equipment but he also started shooting with his cell phone. Check his blog out at http://cellularobscura.blogspot.com/

So in that spirit I give you the Valley through the little lens of my iPhone. Shooting with my iPhone reminds me to not over think my photos and brings to mind something a professor once told me. “The Camera doesn’t matter only your eye.”  Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Note: I edited these photos using an app call Best Camera, fun little editing program.

I was very surprised to see very few people dressed up at the midnight showing of the new Harry Potter movie, however some of the fans had very cool Tshirts.

Welcome to the VMS Photographers’ Blog!

Hi!  This is Dina, one of the staff photographers here at the Valley Morning Star.  My colleague Josh Bachman and I decided that we talk about photography so much that we should start a blog here on valleystar.com.  We both have a love for photography, and wanted to share that with you, the reader.  I’m sure lots of you have seen one or both of us at a WhiteWings game, or at a community event.  We take so many pictures, but not all of them make it to our paper, so this blog is a place where we can showcase some of our favorites that landed in print and some that didn’t.  But we hope this blog will be more than that: we hope we can have discussions with you about photography, from lighting to composition, to whatever subject takes our fancy when we’re looking through the lens.  It’s a place where we can continue to learn from each other, as well as from you, and where we hope we can give you guys something as well.  Please, feel free to comment (in fact, I’m shamelessly hoping you guys will comment), share your photography experiences with us, or even just stop by to say “hey… i saw you at a game!”

You’ll see posts from both Josh and myself, but today, here just a couple of quick photos we’ve done within the last week.  Here’s to getting started!
